Operator stores account for just 6% of mobile content downloads worldwide according to Juniper Research, less than a tenth of Google Play and the App Store’s 70% combined share.
The analyst’s Mobile Content Business Models: OTT & Operator Strategy & Forecasts 2013-2017 report claims that the increasing popularity of Over The Top stores had led to many operators closing their own storefronts. But it is not all bad news for operators: the report’s author Dr Windsor Holden said that they can leverage their billing relationships with end users to retain a foothold in the content market. “Simply by offering consumers a billing choice, monetisation rates will rise dramatically,” he explained.
Indeed, storefronts who have already integrated carrier billing have apparently seen a 5-6 fold increase in conversion rates, compared to credit card billing.
